carly robertson | my design approach to documenting

Hi everyone! It’s Carly here to share with you my design approach to documenting in my Project Life album and how creating modern clean layouts is so easy to do with just a few simple design tips.

First let’s talk whitespace. For me whitespace is one of the simplest ways to create a clean and modern page, and the easiest way to create more whitespace in your layout is to print your photos with a white border. I typically print all my 4×6 photos with borders and my 3×4 images usually have a white board if not around the entire photo, the top or bottom of the card will have whitespace.

Another trick I use for creating more whitespace on my pages is to do all my journaling on either a 4×6 or 3×4 white journal card.  For example, I start each month with a “Currently” journal card which is always just black text on a 4×6 card. For additional journaling I often use the smaller 3×4 size and again I love the simple design of black text on a white journal card. Sometimes I’ll dress up the design of my journal cards with either a digital stamp like what I did with the words “these days”, or a small embellishment, but definitely I take a less is more approach.

Another design tip I use to keep my layouts clean and simple is to add my journaling or a digital stamp directly on my photos. I find this simple design trick is a great way to still keep your page clean, at the same time it adds interest to your photos and help your images tell more of the story.

The main purpose of my Project Life album is for capturing and documenting all the little things in my life that makes me, uniquely me. I use annual digital books to capture the bigger moments like birthdays and other celebrations, and I have a Letters to My Daughters book specially for documenting my girls, but when it comes to my Project Life album it’s all about documenting the little details. Because my PL album’s main purpose is focused on capturing the little details around me, my photography reflects that, which brings me to my final design tip – simple photos.

I find that often it’s those smallest most ordinary moments in our lives that can capture our biggest emotional memory, which is why my photograph focus for my PL album is to photograph the little details around me. It may sound really simple, but taking those detail photos like the flowers I picked up from the market, or what I’m having for lunch, or even of my living room just after cleaning it, it’s those little bits and pieces of our lives that make us who we are.

So next time you’re doing laundry take a picture of the pile of clothes in the hamper or maybe of the folded ones at the end. Or what about capturing the mail on your entry table, or your child’s school bag at the backdoor. Focus on capturing the little things around you.

paisleepress_carly_IMG_8It’s sometimes hard to think about photographing the little things around us on a daily basis because it just seems so ordinary and mundane, but believe me, it is those little details that make our lives special and they have such a wonderful way of telling our own unique story.

I love this, Carly! I’m working toward documenting more of the little things and this was very inspiring.

Thank you Leah! 🙂

My next layout will definitely have this concept idea! So you, so perfect! As usual ?

Thanks Carolina for the kind words!

Hello,
Your layouts are beautiful. Do you print the 3×4 cards at home? Do you use photoshop? Do you mind explaining how you create them exactly? Thank you, Kim Norment

Hi Kim! Yes I do print my journal cards at home and I do use Photoshop. To print my 3×4 journal cards I first create them and I almost always use the Paislee Press Minimalist Templates found here: http://the-lilypad.com/store/3×4-Photo-Templates.html. Once my 3×4 cards are made I open a new 4×6 size page in Photoshop and just drag and drop my 2 – 3×4 journal cards onto the page and print. I have a Canon printer and use 4×6 Canon Matte photo paper to print on. I hope that answered your questions, but if not please let me know. Carly

Hi Carly! Wondering what your favorite fonts are for your journaling cards?

Hi Emily! My favourite font is hands-down Raleway, in all its variations! I love that font and use it all the time. 🙂

Thank you Carly! This post was really helpful and inspiring for me! I have always admired your pages. The PL thing have always fascinated me, but I have felt so overwhelmed, thinking that I have to include everything, having major problems picking pictures and trying to balance the whole thing, both pictures vs space and avoid colour clashes but still keep it colourful. Now I am totally inspired to do maybe a month pr spread, and to include a little, not everything. That will make it so much easier. Those other things might be documented elsewehere. I will rather try to focus that my spread looks good to my eye (as this is the whole drive for my creative process). Maybe I can also include stories that I don’t even have any photos to go with. Well, thanks again!

Sooo inspiring!

Absolutely stunning layout (as always!) and great tips, Carly. You’re such a talent! I love your work and always look forward to reading your posts. xo, Catherine

Yoou will change out some materizl similar to the employee phone checklist which does not warrant changing the plan date on the front cowl.

Hi Carly
I’m so happy to see your lovely pages each time.
Do you do your photo edits in Photoshop only, and what kind of filter makes your photos so bright? Or do you do your edits on the smartphone directly?
Thank you – you inspire meso much

Hi Carly,
I love your plain/minimalist way of documenting. I have quite a task on my hands (40 yrs worth of photos) and I need a quick, streamlined, not too complicated way of going about it…otherwise I will give up after week one… . My layouts will not only have the small things in life but anything and everything – a lot of existing photos and therefore all kids of style and colour. Which means that it will be hard to achieve this calm almost pastel look that I love about your photos. Of course I can go black and white for some, but I don’t want to do that all the way. Have you got some suggestions for me (maybe some software etc…) I can use to change the look of the pictures (basically lighten them up) to pull together layouts with photos that are what they are? I can be more mindful when taking pictures from now, but what do I do with my old treasures? Many thanks!
