confetti party!

Thanksgiving Weekend went something like this: Eat turkey, take a break, eat pie, take a break, eat more turkey. Avoid the malls on Black Friday, but end up at Target, which turns out is just as bad…maybe even worse than the malls. I was on a mission to find 2015 headbands but our local Target didn’t have any New Years themed products out yet. Bummer. I then headed to Party City (still feeling optimistic at this point) but it turns out they didn’t have them either. I ended up getting the generic “Happy New Year” tiaras, a gold Happy New Year Hat and a bag of gold star confetti.

On Sunday morning, the confetti throwing commenced.

The first few confetti throws were flops. My clicking couldn’t keep up with the speed of falling confetti. I would capture them right as they were throwing the confetti and when I clicked again, I would capture the tail end, when most of the confetti had already fallen. No confetti in either frames. (We had other timing issues as well. Do we throw on three or after three?)

Then I switched to continuous mode and, Eureka! I got confetti! Lots of it! In mid air!

For best results, shoot in continuous or burst mode. This is the setting that enables you to take a lot of photos in quick succession and is available on DSLRs, most point and shoots and smartphone cameras. (On the iphone, just keep your finger on the shoot button. It will snap away until you take your finger off!)

The aftermath was a little messy, but TOTALLY worth it. It helped that they were just as excited about cleaning up the confetti as they were about throwing them. “This is SO fun!” Their words, not mine. I swear it.

Where are you on the holiday card sending spectrum? On the signed, sealed and ready to deliver end? Way on the other end or somewhere in between?

Blog Comments

Infographic-style cards designed and ordered! Waiting for them to arrive and then they need addresses, which takes a while because I insist on handwriting vs. labels because I am old-fashioned. We send a gazillion cards because, Air Force life means lots of beloveds all over the place.

Ha! Read this and laughed out loud. We’re Navy and it’s so true! Soooo many peeps and new ones every year 😉

Cannot wait to see your cards Elizabeth…i’m getting one right??

Absolutely : )

Signed, sealed, and delivered. I tend to like to get my cards early and address them in small batches in November. It lets me take my time, handwrite everything, and not worry about it in December. I had an extra incentive this year because we’ll be traveling so I had to get the cards out.

I like your timeline Nat, I might consider starting before Thanksgiving next year!

It’s nice. Card-writing usually happens on the couch with a glass of wine on a Saturday evening watching football 🙂

I have ALWAYS wanted to try this, but I’m afraid that either the lighting will be horrible or I won’t get any good confetti-in-the-air photos…and then I will have let my kids make a mess for no good reason…and then I’d just be depressed for the rest of the day.

But I don’t know…this DOES look pretty fun. I think we’ll have to give it a go this year!

Working on my card design and hoping to have something to send out by mid next week.

Love the confetti throwing idea. Would be so cute to make a little stop motion video from. The unused frames and include a QR code on the card to link to the video!

Completely brilliant idea, Yolanda. I may have to do that with all of my discards (there are about 150 of them… a 3-year old and an 8-month old don’t make it easy!).

really really love this idea Yolanda!! Thanks for suggesting it!

I’m in the will-you-please-both-look-at-the-camera-at-the-same-time phase! I’ve attempted two photo shoots. First one was too grey outside so the light was really dim; second one went alright. Whatever. Getting these babies to the printer today, with or without a decent pic!

Oh, I know that phase very well! Still in the thick of it. Hooray for being done! Happy holidays Catherine!

If I ever have children, please can they be as adorable as yours?

This is SO cool, Liz!!

LOL, I am completely at the very, VERY far end of the spectrum.

ie. Yesterday, I thought to myself: “It would be such a nice idea to do some holiday cards this year…”

I’ll have to grab your address just in case I do get them done….
