catherine saunders | documenting the week

This summer, we had a pretty consistent new routine which I wanted to make sure I documented. So when I saw Ali Edwards announce that she’d be doing her annual Week in the Life project in August, I decided to jump on board. I’ve been documenting monthly this year rather than weekly, so I really liked the idea of spending one week capturing our routine.

I’d love to say that I took a million amazing photos and journaled all the details of the week, but my approach ended up pretty pared down and simple. Rather than completing a separate album for this project, I decided to create a few 12×12 layouts to add to our existing pocket page album.

Here’s the first layout:

On the left side, I created a title page using an 8.5 x 11 inch insert, a piece of white cardstock and a template from 4×6 photo templates volume 5.

The “currently” text is from pictures + words no. 16.

On the right side I used a Design F pocket page from Project Life to document Monday and Tuesday.

I used the photo of the boys in the car to fill the only 4×6 spot on the page and kick off the series of layouts. The text layout is from 4×6 photo templates volume 5.

I love the brush script mixed with type, so I knew I wanted to use the days series of journal cards and photo templates to document our week in detail. To create the days cards, I just added the specific date to each day of the week journal card and printed them on white card stock.

I also created a simple card detailing our weekday routine in the summer, which has been pretty consistent since we enrolled our youngest in day care and our preschooler in day camp so I can work from home. Since we’re moving later this year (and everything will be different next summer), I wanted to make sure I got this summer’s routine on paper.

One of my favorite ways to mix journaling with photos is the minimalist series of photo templates. In this layout, I’m using the 3×4 photo templates to add details about our days.

I plan to fill one or two more layouts with the rest of our week and weekend. If you’re thinking of taking on this project, but maybe don’t have the time or inclination to fill a full album, this approach may be for you!
