Fine Art Textures: Experiment with Time, Space and Dimension

When you add texture to a photograph, you experiment with time, space and dimension. You change the image’s reality and greatly alter perception.
There are many ways to apply textured overlays to your photos. Here is the simple Photoshop method that I use:
1. Place the fine art texture over your photo.
2. Change the Blend Mode. Most of the time, I choose Multiply, Screen, Overlay or Soft Light.
3. Change the Opacity.
4. Use a soft brush to erase the texture from undesirable areas (e.g. skin).
5. If you want to add another texture layer, repeat the above steps until you are satisfied with the result.
I also apply texture when I want to experiment with light.
Textures compliment landscape photography.
I often add a fine art texture when I want to infuse a bit of magic and fantasy into an image.
