Remember these? Our wedding photos were stored on this CD and this cd only. I didn’t transfer them to my computer and I didn’t have an extra set backed up on an external hard drive. I honestly don’t know how it came down to this. I’m pretty diligent (some would say obsessive, maybe even bordering on compulsive) about photo storage. All our photos (or so I thought) are stored on external hard drives, backed up online (we’re using crash plan) and organized in Lightroom. Except for a mysterious gap in 2005. So many big moments in 2005 – a weekend trip to San Fransisco where Eric proposed. An engagement party and bridal shower. The wedding!! The honeymoon!!! Our first married Christmas!!!!
Luckily, those photos were on the external hard drive, I just didn’t bother to import them into Lightroom. But the wedding photos? NOT on the external hard drive.
When I realized that the only copy I had of our wedding photos was on a CD, panic set in. First of all, I had no idea where I put the CD. What if I accidentally threw it out during one of my manic everything-must-go decluttering sprees? Or maybe it’s in the garage? But isn’t that just about the worst place to store something, what with the extreme temperatures? And didn’t they warn that CDs have a limited lifespan? We’re coming up on our 10 year anniversary already, that’s surely sounds like more than enough time for data stored on CDs to expire.
Thankfully, I did find the CD. It was in the garage. Panic attack number two began when I popped in the CD and the computer immediately rejected it. After a few tries, the dreaded “you’ve inserted a blank cd” message came up. As a last ditch effort, I tried it on my laptop and…it worked.
I can’t even begin to tell you just how relieved I am right now.
Great article! I have the most important pictures on CD, external hard drive and laptop. Checked these copies a thousand times. Now I’m working on printing the best ones, the ones of traveling and everyday life too. Something will survive to the next generation.
Good for you Erica!!
My worst nightmare is losing all our photos. I’m great at documenting our lives but horrible about storing, printing and backing up. This is exactly what I needed to get them off my phone and laptop and onto something secure for the future!!!
Yes, mine too!! I may or may not have cried (I totally did) when I thought they were lost forever. Crisis averted, whew!
YAY for wedding photos being all safe. Some might say that you should make a photo book out of them… some might say that…
I really should get on that. 🙂
I take pleasure in, result in I discovered just what I
used to be taking a look for. You have ended my 4 day long hunt!
God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
