madeline + the bookshelf

This is Madeline waking up from her morning nap. On a good day, I’m greeted with a big toothy grin and excited squeals of delight.

can you hear the squealing?
(In case you are wondering, we finally trimmed her bangs a few days ago. She can see again.)

And this is Madeline’s book shelf. Pretty dismal. Didn’t think it was possible for something to look both bare and disheveled at the same time?

I need help asap. HELP! How can I make it pretty and functional? Pointers, tips, links to artwork, or examples of nicely arranged bookshelves would be greatly greatly appreciated.

It needs some color…..maybe paint in…put some paper against the wall to add some color…paint a design

Pop some of her teddies or soft toys up there. HOW can you have empty shelves?!! I WISH that happened at my house!

Well… get more books. 🙂 Baskets along the middle shelf would be nice. I agree – a teddy bear, keepsake jewelry box, etc. would add a nice touch as well. I like the idea of painting in or adding some patterned paper or maybe some "wallies" in behind the books.

Oh to me this shelf is screaming out for some practical and pretty storage!!! Colourful boxes, glass jars, wicker baskets … anything you can store stuff in. Hugs, sue.falstaff

Hi, you could cover the insides and/or the back with wall paper or wrapping paper – florals, spots or stripes would look great, in pastel shades of blue and pink and green and cream

well, I recently underwent the same dilemma. I searched home design mags for inspiration, which I would reccomend. Martha stewart and real simple would be good ones ( is real simple out of print?) anyway, my advic would be something heavy (visual weight) in the upper left and lower right corners 😉 specifics? not sure. I'll mull it over and comment again ;-)))

consider painting the back wall of your bookcases a deeper tone or a contrasting color to make accessories "pop" visually? also, what about a small lamp in the lower left shelf, and you can paint the cord so it blends with the wall? the upper left might look nice with flowers (sorry, it's the prima teacher in me, lol) coming out, like you know all shoved in there so just the faces are showing? ok… that's all I got for now, LOL…

a) where did you get that shelf cause I LOVE IT.

b) I would say books, some framed photographs, a large letter M, jars, piggy bank, keepsakes, baskets.

Hope that helps

I agree with Sally – visual impact should be upper left and lower right, maybe with a brightly colored stuffed animal or toy. Move the pictures from up top down onto the shelves. Add some large items (stuffed animal, basket, vase, etc) to balance the small items (books)Don't feel like you must fill the entire space. Soften the boxiness with an ivy on top, drooping down onto the shelves below.

Please please make sure shelves are bolted into wall studs. It looks like an enticing climb for a toddler.

Do you have a matching toy for any of your books? Such as Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George, Beatrix Potter? If you find a mini easel or plate stand and prop up the book with the toy arranged with it you'll find this fills a lot of space.

Thank you for the great suggestions!! I can't wait to put your ideas to work. I'll post and share when I'm done!
