on routines

I function best when my schedule is predictable and things are orderly. Recently I’d taken on new roles that fit in nicely with my passion for memory keeping (school yearbook advisor,  school photographer, Dance Team Mom/Historian) but these roles also ripped my steady work schedule to shreds. I’m not going to lie, I’m still reeling from it. Nothing brings on frustration and stress for me faster than that constant feeling of “There’s not enough hours in the day!” And nothing agitates me more than when “other” obligations things get in the way of work. I think what frustrated me the most though is that I couldn’t figure out how to fit it all in without sacrificing work hours. The girls are on summer break now, which means that I get a little break too from school related duties and I have some time to figure things out before the new school year starts in August.

And now we embark on yet another new adventure.

Summer break – a real, bonafide summer vacation. No summer school to attend, no need to wake up early, and…no schedules. This will be our new normal for the month of July and I’m going to embrace that wholeheartedly, schedules be damned.

ps. The two photos above were shot with the 24-70mm, f/2.8 lens that I rented to shoot an event at the girls’ school. I didn’t want to love this lens (it’s so pricey), but I do.

i know how you feel, liz. and funny enough, i began composing a post about routine just last night! having a 15 month old definitely puts a kink in things, and i’m starting to try and figure out how i can regain some resemblance of a morning routine, to begin.

thanks for sharing. love the sneak peeks into your every day life.

Good luck with finding a morning rhythm that works for you Rachel! It’s definitely something I struggled with it so much when my daughters were that age. Everything was new and it seemed as soon as I found a schedule, something (naps, eating habits, etc.) would change and we’d have to figure it out all over again.

Summer break is in full swing here too and I live the extra 1 hr. Of sleep before going to work 🙂 Love those 2 photos! Even if I can’t see your face you still look pretty

Hooray for an extra hour of sleep Shaui! Enjoy your summer break. Miss you friend!

It sounds scary but also wonderful. okay, mostly wonderful. enjoy it! and let us know how it goes.

The control freak in me definitely finds the “no schedule” approach scary as heck. I will keep you posted…if I survive. 🙂

Because the Canon 24-70 was out of budget, I recently bought Tamron version (28-75 f2.8) and I love it. Mine was a lucky Craigslist find, but even full price the Tamron is significantly cheaper than Canon, but a very good lens overall.

Glad to hear you’re happy with the Tamron lens, thanks for sharing Yolanda!

Totally empathise with that feeling, Liz….
I have such admiration for you for taking on all those roles!
You rock.

Haha, you empathize because you’ve been in the same boat! And we keep saying we’re going to learn how to say no one of these days? But if I were given a chance to do it over, the answer would still be yes so I suppose what’s been most eye-opening is realizing that perhaps my priorities have shifted.

This is so timely for me right now as I struggle to find a much needed balance at home between all of the work/personal/family/blog tasks I’m juggling. Really loved reading this new and different perspective on routine. Food for thought, that’s for sure.

Everything you said. Whew. It doesn’t get any easier as they get a little older, either! My 24-70 is the lens that almost never comes off my camera… not to be an enabler or anything ; )
