carly robertson | summertime documenting

Hi there! I hope everyone is having an amazing summer so far! It’s Carly here again to share more pictures from my summer project life binder. Last month, I shared how I opted to make the switch from my 12×12 project life binder to a smaller 6×8 binder for the summer because of its portability and more manageable documenting size during the busy summer months. And I am loving it!

What I love most about this smaller format is I don’t have to do any page planning. I have simply been taking all my pictures using my iPhone, printing them out when I can and adding them to my binder in no particular order. Instead of focusing on documenting each month, for the summer I’ve decided to lump all 3 months into one. This binder is a collection of photos and journalling for all that happened during the summer of 2014.

Keeping my documenting simple during the busy summer months has made the process really stress-free and surprisingly easy to keep on top of. I still keep a small notebook in my bag to jot down things I want to remember for when I do my journaling later, but other than that my focus is on enjoying every moment of the summer and being present for it all.

Making the decision to not take the majority of my photos with my SLR camera was a big one for me. You can’t dispute the quality of photo you get with a better camera, but in order to make documenting as easy as possible all my picture taking this summer has been with my iPhone. I take and edit all my photos on my phone, delete any I don’t want as I go and each night when I’m charging my phone I download my photos. Then when I have time I go through the photos, select the ones I want to use in my book, add my journaling and print.

After this summer the plan was to go back to my 12×12 binder and SLR photo taking once September rolls around, but to be honest I am really enjoying my current book size and laid-back approach. I won’t make any firm decisions just yet, but I have a feeling that this new simpler approach to documenting just might win out!

How is your documenting coming along this summer? Did you make any changes in order to fit with your summer schedule?

Hi Carly,

I love your style. Your layouts are so beautiful.

Thanks for detailing how you do it, I was just wondering whether you use photoshop to put your photos on polaroid style templates or do you get them printed with borders like that?

Thanks,

Theresa
