I should have seen this coming.

On Tuesday night my laptop quit on me. I don’t even know how it happened. I was saving a photoshop file, walked away to do a load of laundry and when I came back a few minutes later, there it was. A black screen.

They said most likely it’s the logic board. All I can do now is wait and hope for the best.

The guy at the genius bar asked, “Are your files backed up?”

No. Not since May.

How I wish my answer had been different. Here’s a friendly reminder to you to back up your files.

Now on to happier news. Earlier this week, I got a chance to meet the amazingly talented Jaime of Three Paper Peonies.  We met at a new (well new to both of us) dessert place called Fluff Ice. It’s a cute little spot, kind of like pinkberry meets shaved ice.  It was good but in the end we both agreed that the best shaved ice is definitely at Papa Walk.

Got a few photos with Jaime’s instax camera.

Ethan is seriously the cutest thing ever. So sweet and proper and well behaved (vs. madeline who’s anything but. Note the water drenched dress in the last photo).

Good times. We’ve already made plans for another play date.

I feel your pain!!!

My video card went out three weeks ago! & since it’s soldered to the logic board, there was nothing I could do but buy a new macbook pro… my AppleCare expired in January. Thankfully I got it to work long enough to backup (it had been a month) – but now it’s a PITA to get used to all the quirks Lion has that Snow Leopard didn’t have. Plus, I can’t access some of the files on my EHD – it’s all very random!!

Good luck getting your computer sorted out!

I’ve heard nothing but bad things about Lion. Not looking forward to making that transition when the time comes. What model MBP did you have? If you have a late 2007 and early 2008 MBP model, you might be eligible for a free repair: http://www.macworld.com/article/154456/2010/09/nvidiagpu_macbookpro.html

Lion is definitely a pain… today I was trying to scrap some pages, but every time I opened a paper or element… I would get an annoying dialog “This was downloaded from the internet, you sure you want to open it??!?!?!” Even for stuff I’ve opened before! So far that & the EHD access are the only issues… crossing my fingers!

Thanks for the info! It was a regular macbook, not pro. I’m pretty sure it was my own fault — I was completely careless with how I toted it around at the university. My CD drive was also out, after it took a fall… I’m definitely a lot more careful now!

Gah! I hope you’re able to get your stuff 🙁 (and um, where is the photo of the two of you?!)

haha. i know, totally forgot to take that photo. what kind of scrapbookers are we?

Oh that’s terrible! I DO backup (automaticly with Time Machine on an external hard drive) but still worry that the external hd gives in some day…

Haven’t tried Lion yet (hubby already installed it on his Apple and likes it)

Glad to hear someone likes Lion. I have fears of my externals crashing as well. Am definitely signing up for crash plan when I get my laptop back!

If you are using Time Machine to back up to a Time Capsule be very worried! Mine has died recently and it is not covered by warranty. It is the power supply that has died and the actual disc is OK and can be taken out and put into an empty box to use. The problem is that it gets over heated because no air can get to it due to the rubber seal underneath. The average life span of a Time Capsule is 19 months, which we only found out once mine died. Mine was about 2 years old. Looks lovely but unfortunately not up to the job. A modification can be made though to let air get to the fan but isn’t done by Apple.

This was after my logic board had gone too on my MBP. Again, hard drive OK but had to pay for a new logic board. Interesting about the graphics chip because that was when mine was made and I’ve noticed it’s still got that same chip in now with the new logic board.

If the motherboard went out, you may be able to recover the files on the hard drive by removing the hard drive. Once the hard drive is removed you can either buy a cable or an external hard drive case to convert the hard drive to an external hard drive. You should then be able to attach the drive to any PC and copy the files.

Good luck!

Thanks Lynette. The place I took it to will be doing the data retrieval, if it even comes down to that. Hopefully it’s just the logic board and not a failed hard drive as well. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh Liz, what a terrible things. I hope they are able to recover your photos + files. What would we do w/o them. I use time machine and so far so good. I just hope that my computer and external doesn’t crash at the same time. I’ve also been thinking about using an on-line storage site but haven’t finished researching yet.

Cute photos of Madeline and Ethan. What no photo of you and jamie?!!! I guess that means you guys have to meet up again.

Hey Kym! Will definitely get a photo next time around. Hopefully. I don’t think either of us are wild about being in front of the camera, haha!

This post by Steph at the Daily Digi is what sold me on crash plan. http://thedailydigi.com/backing-up-is-boring/

EKK Oh NO! 🙁 My laptop is basically at its last leg. BUT I can not afford f new computer so my hubby has connected a keyboard and mouse to it so I can use it. YES its that bad lol I keep sending over my documents and pictures to my external hard drive because I know any minute

How fun that you and Jaime met up! So fun!

Sorry about your laptop! That just stinks!

Great you met Jaime! 🙂 And I hope you’ll get your laptop back very soon!

You and Jaime ! That’s great, love the photos. Thanks for sharing this with us. And sorry for your laptop, hope you’ll get it soon 🙂

Oooooh, I’m backing up RIGHT NOW. June was last time 🙁
Thanks for the reminder; i’m very very sorry for you.

Love the pictures you’ve made. looking forward to a new collab …. ?!!!

Oh my, I feel for you on this. My 2006 iMac died TWO DAYS before my brand new one arrived. I went into a cold sweat since I wasn’t on top of backing up. I’m waiting on the verdict. My hardcore Mac friends assure me that a black screen is better than other error screens that can pop up. Good luck!

P.S. Love your new journaling cards!
