hello, love (the photobook)

The photobook I was working on for Maddie’s birthday arrived last week. I ended up ordering a softcover 8×10 portrait sized album from blurb.

One of my favorite pages in the album is this photobooth mosaic – it includes a photo of every guest that attended the party and it was one of the easiest pages to pull together because all the photos had the same striped backdrop. If you can do a little pre-planning for your birthday/shower/party event, I highly recommend designating an area where everyone can go to take a photo with the guest of honor.

You can see more layouts from this album here, or view the entire album here:

Can you tell us more about your experience with Blurb and the photos you have crossing both pages? Did they line up correctly? Did you have to guess at making any adjustments? Were you satisfied at how they turned out? They look really nice in your previews. I’d love to do that, but too concerned about them shifting and not looking nice in the final product.

Hi 3beans,

I’ve ordered a lot of books from Blurb and have been happy and satisfied with the results. On the rare occasion that something went wrong, they provided excellent customer service, corrected the issue and shipped a new printed book very very quickly.

For this book, I didn’t make any adjustments on the photos that spanned two pages mainly because I chose photos with lots of white space and was ok with losing some of the detail to the gutter. BUT, with the previous album (the book of audrey-isms – I haven’t posted the printed album here yet), I did make adjustments so that I wouldn’t lost any of the details to the gutter. Basically what I did was assume that a 1/4 of the page on either side of the spread would be a sort of “buffer” zone. It’ll probably be better if I post visuals to explain. I hope to be able to put together that post for you soon. Anyways, I was really thrilled with the way the pages printed with that method. Perfectly. 🙂

I really love your new album! And a late ‘Happy Birthday’ to Madeline!

Hi Liz! I’m Gemma and I’m trying to make a photo book for my son’s first birthday. I saw your books on Blurb.com and they are just awesome!!!!! Your daughters are so lucky to have such a talented mom as you. I love all the photos and also the fonts that you used for your books! Could you tell me what fonts they are? (if you don’t want to, don’t answer!) Now I must return to think about my photo book 😉 Thank you!

Hi Gemma,

You are so sweet, thank you! The fonts that I use most are american typewriter and helvetica. Good luck and have fun putting together your son’s 1st birthday photobook!

Thank you so much for your answer, Liz. I hope my book is good enough to show you. Have a good day!
